Hamilton, Bermuda, 15 November, 2010. The Association of Bermuda International Companies (ABIC) will this week bid farewell to longstanding chairman David Ezekiel, a founder and leader of Bermuda’s voice for international business.
Mr. Ezekiel was elected Chairman of the International Companies Division of the Chamber of Commerce in 1989, and in 2001 led the ICD team that founded the Association of Bermuda International Companies, ABIC. He will address the organization as Chairman for the last time at its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, November 17, when George Hutchings will assume the Chairman’s role.
During his tenure, Bermuda became a leading centre for reinsurance, with a wave of new companies setting up on the island in the early 1990’s and again following the terrorist attacks in New York in September, 2001. International business became the largest sector in Bermuda’s economy, and ABIC’s role grew along with it.
As Chairman of ABIC, Mr. Ezekiel acted as its spokesman and worked to promote the interests of international business to the Government of Bermuda.
Mr. Ezekiel founded International Advisory Services and developed it into the largest captive manager in Bermuda. In 2009, it was acquired by Marsh, and he became the chairman of Marsh Management in Bermuda.
In recognition of his career and his leadership of ABIC, he was awarded the Bermuda Insurance Institute Lifetime Achievement Award by a committee of his peers.
At his retirement from his ABIC post, he was also commended by Premier Paula Cox for his commitment to promoting Bermuda as a domicile of choice for international business.
“David Ezekiel understands that success breeds success. When Bermuda does well, business does well. He appreciates that and has consistently spoken to the sustainability of Bermuda as a preferred domicile,” said the Premier.
“During the course of his tenure what I have found especially remarkable is that even when we may have had differing perspectives, he has been loyal in upholding the success of the Bermuda model globally. That reflects maturity and sensitivity. That is what I look forward to seeing more of as we seek the New Normal in our public-private sector dealings,” she added.
“I wish David well in his retirement from ABIC and trust that he will continue to promote Bermuda as a domicile of choice for international business.”
ABIC, the voice of international business, represents more than 130 international companies incorporated in Bermuda.
